Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) supported the opening weekend of Christchurch’s new Te Kaha Stadium, helping ensure communications systems operated smoothly during the Super Rugby Pacific matches over Anzac weekend.

From media crews, event organisers, security teams and mobile network operators, many different systems need to operate simultaneously within a crowded radio environment.

This includes temporary radio equipment installed to support broadcasting, security, and entertainment, all utilising radio spectrum in a confined area.

RSM investigators were on site throughout the weekend to help manage this environment. Their role included monitoring for potential interference, as they arose.

RSM worked closely with event organisers, broadcast providers, and other stakeholders to support reliable communications across the venue. This helped maintain consistent communications and ensured critical services operated without disruption.

Venues like Te Kaha bring added complexity that require careful planning, technical expertise, and a clear understanding of how multiple systems interact within a shared radio environment.

Events of this scale provide valuable insights into how complex radio environments perform in practice. Learnings from that weekend will be used to support planning and improve communications for future events at the stadium.
