Cancel a licence

Licences in the Register of Radio Frequencies (the Register) can be either radio or spectrum licences. Learn more about radio and spectrum licences.

There is a separate cancellation process for both radio and spectrum licences. Read how to:

 

Cancel a radio licence

Radio licence holders can use the Register to view their licence details and to request cancellation of radio licences that are no longer needed.

How do I cancel a radio licence?

Online

To cancel a simple radio licence online (e.g. land mobile simplex):

  • Logon to the Register with your User Name and Password
  • Select Manage Licences > Cancel Radio Licence
  • Select [Search] to view all your radio licences, or you can enter the relevant licence number and then select [Search]
  • To check you are cancelling the correct licence, select the licence hyperlink which will take you to a new screen. To continue with your cancellation select [Back]
  • Tick the Cancel check-box next to licences you wish to cancel.
  1. Select [Continue]
  2. Select [Cancel Licences] to confirm cancellation. This permanently cancels the licence. When cancelled the licence cannot be reactivated.
  3. An email notifying cancellation will be send to the email address on your client number.
    • Note | If an invoice has been created but not yet paid, you can still cancel the licence. A corresponding credit note will be applied to the invoice when the licence is cancelled.
    • If you have started the payment process and created an online pending fee but not completed your transaction, you can still cancel the licence. Once cancelled, the licence will no longer be available for payment. If the annual licence renewal fees are due at the same time, the licence will be removed from your list of licences due for payment in the Register.

To cancel a complex radio licence (e.g. point to multipoint or point to point); follow the simple radio licence process above. Be aware that you will only be able to select the primary licence for cancellation.

Once the primary licence is cancelled, all associated licences are cancelled simultaneously. The licences cannot be reactivated.

An email notifying cancellation will be send to the email address on your client number.

By Email

If you do not have online access to the Register you can send an email to info@rsm.govt.nz with the subject line “Licence Cancellation” advising the licence numbers you wish to cancel. You may be asked to provide additional proof that you are the licence holder. This option does not apply to spectrum licences.

 

Cancel a spectrum licence

This procedure applies to the cancellation of spectrum licences only.

What is required?

An online statutory Form 10 Notice of cancellation of spectrum licence is required to be submitted online in the Register of Radio Frequencies (the Register) to cancel a spectrum licence. A Form 10 that intends to cancel a spectrum licence is not valid until it is registered in the Register.

A current rightholder (holder of the spectrum licence) or a manager (manager of management right) can start the cancellation of a spectrum licence (depending on the licence cancellation authority). Authorities can be found under the licence conditions when searching the Register.

Either party can submit a Form 10 online in the Register to the Registrar of Radio Frequencies provided they have the necessary rightholder or manager privilege assigned to their User Name in the Register. If applicable, both parties will be electronically notified by the Registrar once the cancellation has been registered.

Online spectrum licence cancellation

  • Logon to the Register, with your rightholder or manager User Name and Password
  • Select Manage Licences > Spectrum Licence Forms > Cancel Spectrum Licence
  • Select [Search] to view all your spectrum licences, or you can enter the relevant licence number and then select [Search]
  • Select the licence number you wish to cancel, then the [Select] button.
  • A Form 10 will display. Note a spectrum band manager may need to approve the cancellation. If so, select the [Notify Manager] button. Otherwise, select the [Submit Form 10] button
  • After the Registrar of Radio Frequencies registers the online form, only then will your licence be cancelled
  • Once your licence has been cancelled, you will receive email notification.
  • When cancelled the licence cannot be reactivated
    • Note | A separate Form 10 will need to be submitted for each spectrum licence cancellation.
    • If you have started the payment process and created an online pending fee but not completed your transaction, you can still cancel the licence. Once cancelled, the licence will no longer be available for payment. If the annual licence renewal fees are due at the same time, the licence will be removed from your list of licences due for payment in the Register.
    • A corresponding credit note will be applied to unpaid invoices that are created prior to cancellation.
