Allocation of spectrum at 3.5 GHz for broadband wireless access - round 4

Spectrum at 3.5 GHz was available for specific geographic areas between 2001 and 2016 for broadband wireless access. In 2016, this was suspended pending 5G spectrum allocation work.

About this allocation

Between 2001 and 2016, blocks of radio spectrum suitable for fixed (broadband) wireless access use were allocated. Licences were to be made available for specific geographic areas, typically for high speed internet connections in rural/provincial areas.

Several allocation round were held during this period.

Current situation

In 2016, a moratorium was placed on new allocations in preparation for the deployment of 5G services in New Zealand.

See Preparing for 5G in New Zealand for more information about the 5G allocation process.
