How to become an approved Radio Engineer or Certifier

You must be competent in the radio communication engineering industry to become an Approved Radio Engineer (ARE) or Certifier (ARC).

The role of an ARE/ARC

As an ARE or ARC, you'll have access to the Register of Radio Frequencies (RRF) to assist clients to:

  • apply for a radio or spectrum licence
  • certify a radio or spectrum licence
  • modify a radio or spectrum licence
  • cancel a radio or spectrum licence.

AREs can:

  • access the RRF to create planned radio licences and planned spectrum licences
  • provide licence certificates for planned radio licences and spectrum licences
  • use the RRF's data extract tools to search radio and spectrum licences.

ARCs can:

  • access the RRF to create planned radio licences
  • certify planned radio licences
  • use the RRF's data extract tools to search radio and spectrum licences.

How to apply

  1. Read the requirements for becoming an ARE or ARC, found in PIB 34.
Applications and requirements for approved radio engineers and approved certifiers (PIB 34)
  2. If you meet the criteria in the PIB, complete and submit the "Application for Approved Radio Engineer (ARE) or Approved Radio Certifier (ARC) Status" form (found at the end of PIB 34).
  3. When we receive your application, we'll check it to make sure you meet the criteria.
  4. If you're successful:
    • we'll train you to use the RRF so that you can certify licences
    • you'll be able to use the title Approved Radio Engineer or Approved Radio Certifier, and
    • you'll have access to our resources.
