With New Zealand having gone digital at the end of 2013, the UHF broadcasting bands have been repurposed for digital terrestrial television broadcasting. However, the VHF broadcasting bands in 44-51, 54-68 and 174-230 MHz may largely remain unused with the switch off of analogue television.

Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) is keeping a watching brief on International developments in this area and plan to review the usage of VHF band III spectrum in the frequency range of 174-230 MHz. This is in line with the proposal in the Radio Spectrum Five Year Outlook 2012-2016.

Public consultation will take place as part of the investigation, with further details to be announced via the Radio Spectrum Management Business Update e-newsletter.
