Adding new usages to the short range devices GURL

Increased use of portable electrical appliances and mobile devices, like smart phones and watches, has driven interest in wireless charging.

About wireless charging technology

This is the mechanism to wirelessly transfer power and associated auxiliary features through an inductive loop system. It has two components that consumes radio spectrum below 30 MHz .

Consultation

In August 2018, we undertook consultation concerning these technologies. The consultation document identified that these two components could fall within the definition of short range devices, and would be covered by the possible amendments to General User Radio Licence for Short Range Devices (GURL SRD). The proposed changes to GURL SRD that were considered in this consultation included:

  • clarification to recognise the use of certain frequency ranges already permitted in GURL SRD for wireless power transmission (WPT) devices, and
  • additional provision and associated technical conditions to be added into the GURL SRD to allow a broader frequency range in 0.1485-30 MHz to be used for inductive loop systems.

Outcome

After reviewing the submissions received from the consultation, we decided to put on hold the proposed new provision for inductive loop systems applicable across the broader frequency range in 0.1485-30 MHz.

Adding new usages to GURL-SRD in frequencies below 30 MHz — technical consultation

Instead, we have published a revision of the GURL SRD with editorial amendments to clarify the use of certain frequency ranges (such as 9-205 kHz and 315-430 kHz) that are already permitted in GURL SRD also for use by wireless power transmission.
