The 'Internet of Things' - don't forget product compliance

The ‘Internet of Things’ is a phrase describing a network of physical devices connected together for sharing information.

Suppliers of items that fit under the “Internet of Things” (lighting, heating, appliances, security systems, metering for power, gas and water etc.), are reminded to verify products with New Zealand radiocommunications compliance requirements. Many of the wirelessly controlled devices are sourced from countries that have different frequency plans to New Zealand. If your product is not compliant with the appropriate standards and licence requirements, it could result in poor performance and the potential to cause interference.

Suppliers must take the necessary steps to make sure their devices meet the compliance requirements, by:

  1. confirming the device has been tested to the appropriate standard,
  2. completing a Supplier Declaration of Conformity, and
  3. labelling the products correctly.

Wireless device suppliers are required to apply for a Licence to Supply Radio Transmitters. This is free and allows the supply and importation for supply, (or resupply) by way of sale, exchange, lease, hire or hire-purchase of radio transmitters, provided the necessary compliance requirements have been met.
