Step by step guide
Follow this step by step guide to activate your client account to logon to SMART. If you require further assistance please contact us.
Step 1
You will be emailed an Activation Code to activate your account in SMART. An example is shown below.
Leave your email open while you access SMART at http://www.rsm.govt.nz/smart/.

Use the online request for an activation code if you have not received an activation code
Tip
- The easiest way to enter the activation code into SMART is to copy and paste it.
Step 2
The SMART homepage opens. Click the Activate Account icon.
Step 3
The Activate User Account screen opens. Follow the points below.
- Return to the Activation Code email and copy your activation code.
- Paste your activation code into the User Account Activation Code field.
- Enter your current email address. The email address must be the same as the one where your activation code was sent.
- Leave unchecked I am an existing RSM client checkbox.
- Click Activate.

Note
The email address entered here must be the same as the one where your activation code was sent. If you enter a different email address then your client account will not be validated.
Step 4
The User Details screen opens. Read the on screen declaration and then click Continue to agree.
Tip
- Existing RSM licence holders can check their details to ensure they are correct. If incorrect, you can update them in the next screen.
Step 5
The Logon Details screen opens.
- Complete the onscreen fields as instructed
- When all fields have been completed on screen click Save
Field | Action |
Username
| Enter a username of your choice. The username is case sensitive and must be a combination of letters and numbers that contain at least 7 characters, but no more than 20. |
Password | Enter a password of your choice. The password is case sensitive and must be a combination of letters and numbers and at least 7 characters long. |
First /Last Name | Enter or update your First /Last Name |
Expire my Password | You have choice whether you want to retain your password or have SMART prompt you to update it periodically. |
Secret Question and Answer | Choose a secret question from the picklist and then enter an answer. This is our way to identify you when you want help or forget your password |
Email address | Enter or update your email address |
Terms and Conditions | You will need to confirm that you have read our terms and conditions and privacy statement before you can proceed. |
Note
You only have one chance to enter your username. If you choose an inappropriate username then it cannot be changed, so choose carefully.
Tip
- Your password can be changed.
Step 6
Once you have saved your details the Complete User Account Creation screen opens.
To complete the activation process you now need to logon.
- Enter the username and password in the correct format that you chose.
- Click Logon and go to Step 7.

Tips
- Your username is emailed to you and confirms your account activation. An example is shown below.
- Keep the email in a safe place.
Step 7
A pop up window asks if you wish to set up a direct debit as a payment option for any licence fees you incur.
- For existing RSM direct debit clients you may click Yes and view your account details in read only mode OR click No and Continue
- For all other RSM clients choose either Y/N and then click Continue
- If you clicked Yes then complete the online direct debit form in Step 8.
- If you clicked No then complete Step 9.

Tip
- If you decide not to set up direct debit at this stage, then you still have other payment options. A direct debit can be set up at anytime in the future.
Step 8
The Maintain Client Details screen opens. At the same time a direct debit form is emailed to the client. There are two parts to completing the direct debit application:
- Enter your bank account details into the screen below.
- Complete the direct debit authorisation form emailed to you and return by mail the address on the form.
Note
All paid invoices and direct debit notices are sent by email.
Tip
- A direct debit form will be emailed to you to complete and send to our Revenue department.
Step 9
Congratulations your account is now activated.
Click Continue to access the following menus and begin work in SMART.
- Submit a licence application
- Create a data extract file
- Craft and certify a licence
- Modify a licence.
- Pay a planned licence
- Pay annual licence fees.
- Transfer or cancel a radio OR spectrum licence.
- Update your client details OR
- Click Logoff to exit SMART

Tip
- RSM recommends that you check your contact details before starting work.
