Globalstar

Dear Sir/Madam,

Today my attention was drawn to the subject discussion paper which has requests comments and responses today, 14 September 2007 with respect to a proposed auction of spectrum in 2.5 GHz in December 2007.

Point 22 on page 9 states:

2483.5-2500 MHz band allocated to Fixed, Mobile and Mobile Satellite services in New Zealand is currently not used by any of these services. Hence no licences exist in this band.

In fact earlier this year, Telecom NZ in conjunction with Globalstar launched dual-mode satellite/CDMA services on 027 numbers which uses the 2483.5-2500 MHz band as a forward link to the handset in satellite mode. The reverse link from the handset in satellite mode is in L-Band. Specifically Globalstar operates with a centre frequency of 2.494347 GHz with a bandwidth of 11305 kHz.

To find out more about the Globalstar service in New Zealand please see:
http://www.telecom.co.nz/content/0,8748,205273-201928,00.html?nv=sd

Could you please contact me urgently so that I and Telecom NZ can assess the impact of the proposed on 2.5 GHz auction on the Globalstar service currently operating in New Zealand?

Kind regards

Robert Sakker
