Glossary of terms

2G Second Generation Mobile Telecommunications
2.5G Enhanced 2G technologies that increase data rates and thus service capabilities, but use spectrum currently allocated to 2G services
3G  Third Generation Mobile Telecommunications
CDMA Code Division Multiple Access. Also used as a generic term for a family of cellular technologies developed in the USA.
CDMA - 2000 The 3G iteration of the CDMA family of technologies
GSM Global System for Mobile. A European 2G technology, widely used around the world. One of the New Zealand operators uses this and other technology in the GSM family
IMT - 2000 The International Telecommunications Union’s designation of 3G technologies
IMT - 2000 bands The spectrum designated by the ITU for 3G services in the 2GHz band (although not all 3G technologies necessarily must use these bands)
