Review of spectrum allocations for short range devices
The Ministry has undertaken a review of the spectrum allocations for short range devices as covered in the Radiocommunications Regulations (General User Radio Licence for Short Range Devices) Notice 2007. The focus of this review has been on services which are experiencing significant change because of:
- Market growth
- New ITU-R resolutions
- Enquiries which have not been able to be fulfilled within current allocations
An Engineering Discussion Paper on this topic was released on 25 August 2004. Submissions closed on 24 September 2004. On 10 December 2004 a follow up paper was released summarising the submissions and conclusions arising from this review.
Summary of Submissions and Conclusions
In August 2004 The Ministry of Economic Development issued an Engineering Discussion Paper on Spectrum Allocations for Short Range Devices (SRD). The discussion paper invited submissions on a range of emerging issues regarding the spectrum available for SRD. This paper summarises the submissions received and identifies the actions to be taken by the Ministry.

Short Range Devices are low power radio transmitters which are used for a wide variety of applications. This discussion paper covers evolving applications and considers possible changes to the New Zealand regulations on spectrum allocation to provide for future uses.
