Annex 1: Noise measurements at a typical STL receive site in New Zealand

Taking the Mt Kau Kau broadcast transmitter (i.e. STL receive site) as representative of broadcast transmit sites, and using typical STL receive equipment to perform measurements the following was concluded.

Conclusion: The average noise, in a 500 kHz noise bandwidth, was measured as -106.7 dBm, with an uncertainty of +/-0.6 dB. In practice, STLs have a narrower bandwidth, and the actual noise level is likely to be about 2.2 dB less (composite stereophonic) or 3.8 dB less (monophonic).’
